Ecological Services
Queensland Ecologists provides a full range of ecological consulting services across Queensland. From desktop assessments through to field surveys, management plans and compliance reporting — we handle the ecology so your project can move forward.
Ecological Assessments
Ecological Assessment Reports
An ecological assessment report provides a comprehensive evaluation of the flora, fauna and ecological values of your site to support a development application. If you are lodging a DA with council or state government, you will almost certainly need one of these reports to demonstrate your project’s environmental impact has been properly assessed.
Flora and Vegetation Surveys
Flora and vegetation surveys involve systematic botanical fieldwork to map vegetation communities, verify regional ecosystems and assess ecological condition. These surveys are required when your project triggers vegetation clearing provisions or when council needs confirmation of the vegetation types present on your property.
Fauna Surveys
Fauna surveys assess the terrestrial animal species and habitat values present on your site through a combination of trapping, spotlighting, call playback and habitat assessment. You will need a fauna survey when your development may impact wildlife habitat or when threatened fauna species have been identified as potentially occurring in your area.
Targeted Threatened Species Surveys
Targeted threatened species surveys use species-specific methodologies to determine the presence or absence of endangered, vulnerable and near-threatened (EVNT) species, including those listed under the EPBC Act. These surveys are triggered when database searches or habitat assessments indicate that listed species may occur on or near your development site.
Koala Habitat Assessments
Koala habitat assessments evaluate habitat quality and koala density on your site in accordance with SDAP State Code 25 requirements. If your development is in a koala priority area or mapped koala habitat, you will need this assessment to satisfy state planning requirements before your application can proceed.
Protected Plant Flora Surveys
Protected plant flora surveys are required when your site falls within a high-risk area on the Nature Conservation Act flora trigger map and your proposed activity may impact EVNT plant species. This survey determines whether protected plants are present and identifies any permit or management requirements before clearing can commence.
Vegetation Management
Property Maps of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV)
A Property Map of Assessable Vegetation allows you to formally challenge the accuracy of state-mapped regulated vegetation on your property. If the state mapping incorrectly shows remnant or high-value regrowth vegetation where it does not exist, a PMAV can reclassify the vegetation and remove unnecessary development constraints.
Vegetation Clearing Assessments
Vegetation clearing assessments provide the ecological evidence and justification needed to support a clearing application under the Vegetation Management Act. Whether you are clearing for an urban development, agricultural expansion or infrastructure project, this assessment demonstrates compliance with the relevant clearing codes and performance outcomes.
Regional Ecosystem Verification
Regional ecosystem verification involves ground-truthing the state’s mapped regional ecosystems through detailed field survey and botanical analysis. This process is essential when you believe the mapped RE classification is incorrect, as it can change the vegetation management status and development constraints that apply to your property.
Management Plans
Environmental Management Plans
Environmental management plans set out the practical measures to protect ecological values during and after construction, ensuring compliance with development approval and environmental authority conditions. You will need an EMP when your DA or EA includes conditions requiring ongoing environmental management, monitoring and reporting.
Vegetation Management Plans
Vegetation management plans detail the rehabilitation, revegetation and offset strategies required to compensate for approved vegetation clearing. These plans are typically conditioned as part of a clearing permit or development approval and specify the works, timeframes and performance criteria needed to achieve compliant ecological outcomes.
Offset Management Plans
Offset management plans are required when your project results in a significant residual impact on a prescribed environmental matter that cannot be avoided or mitigated. The plan establishes legally binding offset delivery commitments, management actions and monitoring programs to achieve a conservation outcome that counterbalances the impact of your development.
Koala Management Plans
Koala management plans outline the specific measures to protect koalas and their habitat during development in koala-sensitive areas. These plans are commonly required as a condition of approval for projects in mapped koala habitat areas and address matters such as fauna-friendly fencing, landscaping with koala food trees and sequencing of clearing works.
BAL Assessments & Bushfire Management Plans
BAL assessments determine the bushfire attack level for your property in accordance with AS 3959, while bushfire management plans address SDAP State Code 21 requirements for developments in bushfire-prone areas. You need these assessments when building in proximity to bushfire-prone vegetation to ensure your development meets the required construction standards and safety measures.
Weed and Pest Management Plans
Weed and pest management plans identify invasive species risks on your site and set out control, monitoring and prevention strategies in line with biosecurity obligations. These plans are often required as conditions of development approval, particularly for projects involving land clearing or earthworks that may spread invasive species.
Fire Ant Management Plans
Fire ant management plans are mandatory for projects in South East Queensland’s biosecurity zone that involve the movement of soil, mulch or other fire ant carrier materials. This plan demonstrates your compliance with the Biosecurity Act 2014 and outlines the inspection, treatment and movement protocols required before any soil can be transported from your site.
Compliance & Auditing
Environmental Auditing & Compliance
Environmental auditing and compliance services provide independent monitoring and reporting to verify that your project meets its approval conditions and environmental commitments. Whether you need annual compliance reporting, condition audits or ongoing ecological monitoring, these services keep your project on the right side of the regulations.
Ecological Reporting for Councils
Our ecological reporting service for councils provides outsourced ecology expertise to help local governments assess development applications, review ecological reports and manage their environmental obligations. This service gives councils access to specialist ecological knowledge without the overhead of maintaining in-house ecology staff.
Due Diligence Assessments
Due diligence assessments provide an early-stage evaluation of the ecological constraints and opportunities on a property before you commit to a purchase or project. These assessments identify potential environmental risks, general environmental duty (GED) obligations and regulatory triggers so you can make informed decisions and avoid costly surprises down the track.
Approvals & Referrals
EPBC Act Referrals & Assessments
EPBC Act referral support helps you determine whether your project is likely to have a significant impact on matters of national environmental significance (MNES) and, if so, prepares the referral documentation for submission to the Commonwealth. Getting this assessment right is critical — penalties for non-compliance with the EPBC Act are severe and can include project shutdowns.
MSES Assessments
MSES assessments evaluate whether your project will impact matters of state environmental significance, including regulated vegetation, wildlife habitat, wetlands and waterways. This assessment is required under the Queensland state development assessment provisions and determines whether additional state-level approvals or offsets apply to your development.
Ecological Constraints Analysis
An ecological constraints analysis provides an early-stage desktop and preliminary field review to identify the environmental risks and regulatory triggers that may affect your project’s feasibility. This analysis is invaluable during the planning phase as it helps you understand potential constraints, estimate approval timeframes and budget for the ecological work your project will require.
