Senior Field Ecologist

Queensland Ecologists is seeking a Senior Field Ecologist with demonstrated, Queensland-specific senior experience in flora and fauna. This is a role for an established ecologist who can lead field work and deliver assessment-ready results across South East Queensland.

About the role

This is a hybrid role - your base is working from home, with field work across South East Queensland, concentrated around Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and southern Brisbane. You will plan and lead ecological surveys and habitat assessments, collect and interpret flora, fauna and habitat data, and prepare professional reports and mapping outputs that stand up to regulatory scrutiny. You will work closely with our principal ecologist and clients across a varied caseload. Full-time is preferred, but we will consider part-time for the right person.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and lead field work for ecological surveys and habitat assessments
• Collect, analyse and interpret flora, fauna and habitat data
• Contribute to environmental impact assessments and constraints analysis
• Interpret Queensland and Commonwealth regulatory requirements
• Prepare written reports and mapping outputs
• Liaise with project managers, councils and clients
• Support proposals, project design and professional development
• Work safely and independently in varied outdoor environments

What you need

• Senior, Queensland-specific field experience in ecology (flora and fauna) - proven senior-level experience surveying and identifying Queensland flora and fauna, not just a tertiary qualification
• An undergraduate degree in ecology, environmental science, biology or a related discipline (essential)
• A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (preferred)
• CEnvP accreditation highly regarded, though not mandatory
• Strong botany and wildlife knowledge with confident species identification
• Report-writing proficiency for assessment and compliance documents
• Environmental impact assessment experience and sound regulatory knowledge
• Ability to work remotely and manage your own time independently
• GIS and spatial tools competency (highly beneficial)
• Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel for field work across SEQ
